My sister, Madi, recently graduated from college and just landed her first Big Girl Job, which also enabled her to rent her first Big Girl Apartment in Boston with her boyfriend, Luke. This is their first time living together and it seems to be suiting them! Madi has a new-found interest in housekeeping and decorating that has paid off. Their cute flat in the Allston area of Boston is sweet, homey, and a perfect example of what an apartment should look like in your twenties. They “splurged” on the sofa, getting a quality, grey velvet one from West Elm, while saving on some of the other pieces like the unique bar cabinet and a couple of side chairs from a Craigslist “store-closing” sale. The coffee table was a Target find and their kitchen table and chairs were graduation/ Christmas gifts from me (a pair of Ghost chairs) and our brother (who MADE their table!!). My stepfather made their bedroom dresser, also helping the couple minimize the financial burden of furnishing their first place from scratch. She accessorized the apartment with cute, original Etsy art and some of Mom’s hand-me-downs, which give the place a personal, eclectic, youthful feel. Take-aways for your first place: don’t forgo style and quality for budget, but keep it modest. Just get creative with your sourcing, splurge on a few anchor pieces, and get family to pitch in when they can!
Bravo, Madikins! Love you! xoxo
