Adelphi Front 2

As many Saratogians know, the Adelphi just had a HUGE sale, selling off its old (and not-so-old) furniture, tchotchkes, and even old tv’s, as it prepares to undergo what is sure to be a colossal makeover. The lines reached Starbucks (a half- block away) through the three-day sale as many area residents endured the cold to snatch up a piece of Saratoga history.

Last spring, this gem of a landmark (built in 1877 and one of the remaining grand hotels not burned or torn down during the last century) was bought by two local real estate developers (also responsible for The Paddocks) and a partner. Apparently they have big plans (you can read more about it here) and I am so excited to see what may come! Here’s hoping they will keep the charm of the Adelphi we know and love while giving her the decor update she’s needed for quite some time. Good luck, boys! And God Speed!

And in the mean time, here are a few pictures I took during the Preservation Foundation’s tour last summer to remember the old, old Adelphi by. An “ode” in pictures, if you will.

The lobby... and FYI, the woman on the left is in costume for the Preservation event, not some Victorian ghost that haunts the joint.

The room off the bar. Love the mural- hope that makes the cut.

A lot of the wicker was a bit shabby, but I kind of liked it. It felt authentic.

Love this too- hope they leave it as is. Hip bars in NYC would kill for this... looks like it was framed on the cheap in the 60's with a cheap gold frame. But it just works.

The courtyard in back. My favorite place for an after-dinner cocktail during the summer.

I'm not sure if this wall was part of the Van Dam or what, but it's such a cool feature and gives the courtyard it's great "Secret Garden" feeling.

Prettiest pool in town.

Unfortunately, the sun was so bright I couldn't get the inside of the pool cabana visible in the shot. It's super cool- looks like it hasn't changed in 50 years.

Trellis and fence that separates the pool area and courtyard (you know, to keep the riff- raff out of the pool area- ha!).
